What if the domestic space was a place of domination over the female body ?
Directly inspired by the hashtag #StayAtHomeGirlFriend, “the girlfriend at home” is one of the latest trends on TikTok. Having gone viral, this trend features girlfriends at home who recount in videos their days spent waiting for their partner to return, taking care of household chores, cooking, doing school and presenting their beauty routine. Millions of views. Further into the concept, another trend appears, that of “Trad Wifes”, advocating a return to the traditional family model of the 1950s.
Here the idea was to establish an ironic parallel with the creation of « soap operas » - television programs intended for housewives from the 1960s, financed by detergent and soap brands, whose sole objective was to distribute their advertisements - The paintings are inspired by cinematic symbols and advertising codes are reworked to better reflect the gap between form and substance. The project as a whole aims to question the link between capitalism and domestic work.
The series of paintings is built around the image of the female body, sometimes submissive or imprisoned, sometimes emancipated or powerful. A direct allegory of our relationship with the home, which presents itself both as a prison, but also as a refuge. Some paintings refer to mythological characters as well as elements of current popular culture. Like the testimony of a story that evolves in its way of representation, but never in substance.
